When You’re in the Public Eye, You Need Public Relations

HS Blog Public Relations Blog x

Public relations is often thought of as something you only need when things go wrong. However, a good public relations strategy, in part, helps things go right. HS has helped companies of different sizes execute their plan. Here are some things to consider with public relations.

New Things are Happening – And You Need a Plan for That

In any business, you’re always making changes and updates. At the bare minimum, you may have new information you should share in a news release or social post. A discount sale isn’t necessarily newsworthy, but a new product solution may be. In the past month, have you…?

  • Hired a new employee
  • Expanded locations or changed locations
  • Made a partnership or garnered a new customer
  • Participated in a charitable event
  • Developed an innovation

With 24/7 news, there is room for you, if you take a smart approach. Local reporters and writers are always on the lookout for something to feature. Be sure to offer value, share something newsworthy, and not just be salesy or promotional.

The Value of Being an Expert – When Newsworthy Things Happen

You are an expert in your field….and people (and media) seek out expertise if you can offer new information and insights. Remember, when you position yourself with the media as an expert in the field, you may be called upon to comment on a variety of industry, newsworthy business developments. The “story” may not primarily be about you. But you will be a primary element to the story.

For example:

A bad winter storm? Perhaps you’re the product expert on what an emergency kit should include.

A difficult flu season? Maybe you’re the medical expert giving common sense tips on limiting exposure.

Tough financial markets? You could be the expert giving sound advice on financial planning, savings and navigating tough times.

Powerful PR Tools at Your Disposal

Having a strategy for promoting your own newsworthy events, products or involvement is one thing. Having a strategy for responding to a crisis or “bad news” event is another. HS can walk you through how to build a plan for each.

With a plan in place, you may deploy any of the following tools:

  • Press releases and press kits
  • Press conferences
  • Building media lists and media relations
  • Story pitches to key publications and media
  • Media training and coaching for key employees/spokespeople
  • Signage and promotional items for special events
  • Event themes and event production

Every business is slightly different in what their public relations needs or opportunities may be. If you’re wondering about yours, let’s have a chat.
