Celebrating 34 Years of HenkinSchultz: From Red Beers to Big Ideas

The number 34 has been worn by more than a few famous athletes: Charles Barkley, Bo Jackson, Nolan Ryan. But for HenkinSchultz, it also represents a game changer 34 years ago.
In 1991, two former high school friends, Joe Henkin and Kirby Schultz, decided to take a leap. Their big idea? Form a creative agency that would bring fresh thinking and bold ideas to Sioux Falls. Their initial agreement wasn’t written on some fancy contract—it was sealed with a couple of red beers in a tiny downtown office, a toasting tradition that still continues today.
That’s where HS began. And from that moment forward, creativity and collaboration fueled every step of the 34-year journey.
Growing the Dream Team
The early years were defined by a small but mighty team of designers, media planners, and all-around creative problem-solvers. Their synergy was contagious. Clients noticed. The work multiplied. And soon, HS found itself outgrowing its space.
From their fun office on West Avenue near Terrace Park, Joe and Kirby dreamed bigger. They wanted a place that would embody not only their vision, but also create a true home for clients, employees, and ideas.

A Building of Art on a Hill
In 2000, HS broke ground on what would become its iconic headquarters at 6201 S. Pinnacle Place. At the time, the location was a completely undeveloped stretch of Sioux Falls—just one brand-new building standing high on a hill. But HS saw the potential. And much like their approach to advertising, they weren’t afraid to blaze a new trail.
Since then, that hillside has transformed into a thriving part of the city. And HS has continued to “break ground” ever since, both literally and figuratively.

Seeing the Signs, Adding to the Vision
2016 was a big year for HS. Becka Burger, Jason Jellis and Joey Schultz were added as partners, after years of bringing their diverse talents to the agency.
As the agency grew, so did its capabilities. In 2017, the HS Sign Shop officially opened, specializing in vehicle wraps, signage, and all types of interior and exterior design projects. It was a natural extension of the HS promise: helping businesses show up, stand out, and shine in every possible way.
The leadership team expanded again in 2025, adding Emily Sorenson as partner and further rounding out the agency’s commitment to digital marketing, research and innovation.

34 Years Strong
Now, as HS celebrates 34 years in business, the milestones continue. Yes, there have been many awards, big campaigns, and memorable projects. But the proudest milestones are ongoing:
- A dogged dedication to creative excellence
- A passion for helping businesses succeed with exceptional client service
- A core team of great thinkers and doers, all under one roof
From a tiny downtown office to a building on a hill, HS has never lost sight of the spark that started it all—a dream, a friendship, and a couple of red beers.
And as for what’s next? The story is still being written. Here’s to the next chapter, and many more milestones to come.
